Reconstruction under way
Reconstruction works on Stage One of the Gladstone Airport Runway Project are progressing well and according to plan, with Golding Contractors completing the northern apron earthworks this month.
Gladstone Regional Council CEO Graeme Kanofski said following the removal of the old section of the runway, and material from this area being used to fill the extension, the shape of the western end was now well defined.

Collecting for Sight
'For the Sight of Others' volunteers, local business people and identities will take to the streets of the CBD July 8 in a last bid rally to raise some final funds to support the Fred Hollows Foundation. The Foundation works to restore the sight of people in over 20 developing countries around the world and indigenous communities in Australia.
Thanks to the generosity of business sponsors, schools, the Gladstone community and the tireless efforts of a team of volunteers, FTSOO has raised over $140,000 since the project was launched by Gabi Hollows in 2008.

Literary Carnivale
It's Curtis Coast Literary Carnivale time! People wanting to develop their writing or illustrating skills should put a circle around the date July 25 on their calendar - a golden opportunity approaches.
Acclaimed writer Mark Svendsen and multi-award-winning illustrator Gregory Rogers will conduct (separate) morning and afternoon workshops for adults and school students at the Gladstone City Library. These Curtis Coast Literary Carnivale 2009 workshops are bound to provide much valuable knowledge for budding writers and illustrators, as well as more experienced practitioners.

Gladstone children to benefit
Hundreds of local children are set to benefit from more than $44,000 worth of educational toys and resources thanks to the generosity of the Gladstone Regional Council facilitated Gladstone Children's Resource and Advisory Service.
The resources, made possible as a result of surplus funds from the conclusion of phase one of the three year federally backed Gladstone Communities for Children Initiative, facilitated by the Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL), will go to 23 not-for-profit community based groups that work with and support children under the age of five years.

Workforce issues addressed
Local Industry groups participating in the Central Queensland Rapid Response Team, a Queensland Government initiative convened to combat the Global Economic downturn, are implementing strategies to ensure quick and local approaches to job losses in the region.
A Gladstone workforce survey 2009 has been produced by Gladstone's leading industry groups including Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA), Gladstone Area Promotion & Development Ltd (GAPDL) and the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI), aimed at gaining a better understanding of workforce issues in the Gladstone region.

Serving women in our community
In the early 1900s playwright and journalist Marian de Forest conceived the idea of a strong network of women in executive positions working together to take their rightful place in the professions next to men.
This became the global service organisation of Zonta International. The Zonta Club of Gladstone has contributed to the Gladstone community since 1992. The Club selects, funds and participates in community service, education and advocacy projects. Locally the Club raises money through fund raising events such as a race day, fashion parade, International Woman's Day function and the annual Valentine's Day Ball.

Gladstone owns Marley Brown
Gladstone's Marley Brown Oval is officially secured forever as a dedicated sports and entertainment centre, Premier Anna Bligh announced last week.
"The Gladstone Ports Corporation's leadership has meant that this cherished complex belongs forever to the people of Gladstone," she said.
"It cannot be sold. Title for Marley Brown Oval, the grandstand and the associated ovals now sits with the GPC and from there under a 99-year lease to the Gladstone Regional Council."

Paint the Port
Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) is calling for entries for its 2009 Paint the Port Art Competition - a feature of the Port of Gladstone's biennial Port Open Day.
The acquisitive biennial art competition provides local amateur and professional artists with an opportunity to present their unique portrayal of the Port of Gladstone for a chance to win a $2,000 cash prize or a $700 runner-up prize.

Foreshore vandalised
In the weeks since its official unveiling last month, the newly redeveloped Seventeen Seventy foreshore has been the subject of not one but three separate vandal attacks.
As a result of the wanton acts of destruction, in which vandals smashed picnic shelter and street lighting and defaced an entrance sign, Council is appealing to the Agnes Water and Seventeen Seventy communities for support, awareness and assistance with regards to the matter.

Initiated by Gladstone Regional Council and Gladstone Area Promotion Development Limited, the 'Welcome to Gladstone' Morning Tea will be held on Thursday, July 23, at the Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens, Glenlyon Road.

Guts and Glory
Island Sands Boxing Club travelled to Cooroy June 20, hoping to get four of the local boys matched up for fights, but only managed to get two boys matched up. First to fight was Jordon Lindley. He fought Clint Creswell from Digby's gym.
With Jordon listening to his trainers he soon found the right combinations to out - smart his opponent and broke Clint's nose in the third round. He won on unanimous points decision.
