  Student apprentices a win-win partnership
STUDENT-apprentices at the Australian Technical College (ATC) in Gladstone complete their senior education while commencing their career in industry for which they are paid.

The concept of completing high school while studying for an apprenticeship has rapidly gained momentum with the introduction of the 'Earning or learning' policy. The College gives student-apprentices a balanced and structured pathway to a trade career while also delivering invaluable benefits to employers.

Port to adopt study recommendations
THE Gladstone Ports Corporation Limited (GPC) Board will adopt all 18 recommendations in the Connell Hatch Barney Point Coal Terminal Benchmarking Study.

This is in addition to the extensive dust mitigation initiatives undertaken by the port during the past five years.

The study found that Barney Point is reportedly responsible for 3.2% of the total dust PM10 emitted by GPC into the Gladstone reported airshed. The additional measures accepted by the Board is expected to significantly reduce that percentage by an estimated 50 per cent, according to GPC CEO Leo Zussino.

Toolooa graduate gets concert date with tenor
FORMER Toolooa State High School student Kimberley Lowe has just secured a gig of a lifetime: Backing up world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli during one of his concerts on his acclaimed Australian tour.

Kimberley, who is now studying a Bachelor of Music at the Griffith Conservatorium, said it was a dream come true to have been selected by Emily Cox, the Maestro of Choirs and Orchestras in Brisbane, as one of the harmonising vocalists during his concert at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 22.

Hooley Dooleys to star at Emmadale Gardens Family Fun Day

AUSSIE children's entertainers the Hooley Dooleys are on their way to Gladstone this month for a family fun day at Emmadale Gardens.

The hugely popular group is the star attraction of the free fun day being held to celebrate the release of "Parkrise" and "Grandview", the final two stages of Emmadale Gardens residential community.

United front on emission reduction sought
USING the world's best practice and ground-breaking technology is the best approach to reducing greenhouse emissions, Cement Australia national sustainability manager Stuart Ritchie has said.

In response to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Green Paper and the resultant uncertain future impacts of emissions taxing, trading and permits, Cement Australia has reiterated that its first priority will be to protect its Australian production ability and employees.

GLADSTONE Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL) proudly hosted more than 170 business and industry representatives at its popular Enterprise Luncheon at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre.

GAPDL CEO Glenn Churchill said the luncheon was an excellent business networking opportunity for those who attended.

"It provided an insight into local government reform and councils plans for the future. It also gave a greater insight on the latest exciting progress of the $4 Billion Gladstone Pacific Nickel Project. Guests were treated to a two-course lunch and complimentary drinks upon arrival.
