  Liz slams State Government over zero airport funding
Gladstone Regional Council has been left high and dry in terms of State Government funding for the $65 million for the Airport Upgrade Project.

Mayor George Creed and his council along with Member for Gladstone Liz Cunningham were shocked when Premier Anna Blight said her government would not contribute to the airport project.

Mrs Cunningham said she was very disappointed that there was 'zero' funding available.

Policeman honoured
Gladstone Police officer Constable Troy Daubaras will never forget the day he saved the lives of two teenage boys who were drowning off Tannum Sands beach earlier this year.

Constable Daubaras was publicly honoured for his rescue efforts during Premier Anna Bligh's visit to Gladstone last week

He was presented with the State Police Commissioner's Certificate of Notable Action as part of a presentation of several awards for local police station staff during the Community Cabinet luncheon held in Gladstone on Monday 8th December.

Laura wins RSL Youth Award
The Queensland RSL has awarded $500,000 in grants to 124 talented Queensland senior school students as part of the RSL Youth Development Program. Developed by the Q'ld RSL in conjunction with Bond University, the year 11 and 12 Qld students received grants of up to $5,200 for their sporting, academic and community excellence.

The Gladstone region had four worthy recipients, three from Tannum Sands High School, Ashleigh Burns, Jennifer Mercer and Jacob Johnston and one from Gladstone State High School, Laura Koefler.

GAGAL aids Baralaba storm victims
Twelve Gladstone Area Group Apprentices Ltd (GAGAL) apprentices and 3 GAGAL supervisors travelled to Baralaba to assist in the clean up after the devastating storm that hit last Monday night.

General Manager of GAGAL, Kerry Whitaker said "Baralaba is part of our community and as a community based not for profit organisation and, with a number of apprentices being returned to us as a result of the economic downturn, we are pleased to be able to send these young people out to Baralaba to help clean up the debris and support the community out there."

The first home buyers information centre
The Australia Government has announced a temporary increase in the First Home Owners Grant, which ends on 30th June, 2009. First home buyers purchasing an established house will receive a $14,000 grant, and first home buyers purchasing a new house or building a house will receive a $21,000 grant.

John Whitten of Individual Home Loans has joined the First Home Buyers Information Centre, and has the answers to all your questions regarding the grant. There is a lot of incorrect information being given, and it is extremely important to ensure that you obtain the correct advice on the grant, and also on getting the home loan that suits your individual needs.

Unemployment to rise
Premier Anna Bligh did not candy coat her message to the Gladstone community during her visit last week.

While addressing several hundred locals at the Community Cabinet luncheon at the Gladstone PCYC, Premier Bligh told it how it was.

She said unemployment would be the key consideration throughout each and every department and decision made by the state government in the next 12 months at least.

New dental clinic for Gladstone
The Premier announced a $4.2 million upgrade to the public dental service in Gladstone, in the form of a new oral health clinic due to be opened mid-2010.

"This will allow more local residents access to improved dental care on the Gladstone Hospital Campus," Premier Bligh said.

"It's been designed to cater for growth and can be expanded to a 10-chair facility in the future."

Soccer's fab four return

Gladstone's own Fabulous Four of soccer have returned home after a 17 day tour of England and Scotland with 48 other Football Queensland representatives from across the state.

Damon Bray, Andrew Maynard, Joseph Skelhorn and Dylan Clark all trained and played in conditions quite the opposite of what they are used to at home here in Australia.

"We played one of our last games on an iced pitch," said Damon.

Athlete of the year
The Central Queensland Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association Central Queensland Presentation Dinner was held recently in Rockhampton with the Gladstone Region picking up some great awards.

Paralympic swimmer Rhiannon Oliver from Tannum Sands was the NQX Athlete of the Year. She was CQ's only representative at the Beijing Paralympics where she made the final of the 100m breastroke and swam personal best's in 100m and 50m freestyle.
