Tannum Sands State School students played host to their elders during a special day timed to coincide with National Seniors Week. Nearly 100 parents, grandparents and great grandparents, plus other significant elders, joined the children for a book reading and some science fun. School Head of Curriculum Robyn Sotiris said Grandparents’ Day allowed all the students to bring along an older person who was special in their lives. “Each class was given a double page to compile along the theme ‘We love our grandparents’,” Robyn said. “Each class had to decide how to represent that in written or illustrated form.” The finished book, comprising drawings and descriptions, an acrostic poem and plenty of snippets on what makes grandparents special, was on show during the day after an early reading in the library. The elders stayed on to get involved in some scientific experiments as the students celebrated Science Week at the same time.
